Generator Size Guide for Nigeria: kVA, kW, Amps and Fuel Use

Generators are sold in kVA, but your equipment is rated in kW or hp. At a 0.8 power factor, kW is kVA times 0.8, and the table below gives the usual conversions.

How to Size a Generator

  • Add up the loads that run at the same time in kW
  • Multiply by 1.25 to 1.3 to leave headroom for starting current
  • Convert to kVA by dividing by 0.8
  • Choose the next standard size up, then check the largest motor start

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert kVA to kW?

Multiply kVA by the power factor, usually 0.8 for generators. A 100kVA set gives about 80 kW.

Is it better to size up or down?

Size to your real load with about 30 percent headroom. Too small struggles with motor starts, and too large wastes fuel at light load.
